Ko Seok-hyeon: Looking to get back on track

Ko Seok-hyeon (13-3) opened his UFC run with back-to-back wrestling clinics – he outworked Oban Elliott, then shut out Phil Rowe, landing all four of his takedowns. His first UFC defeat came in July, a 29-28 decision on all three cards to Jean-Paul Lebosnoyani that some fans called a robbery. Lebosnoyani’s battering of the previously unbeaten Farman Hasanov last weekend only makes that loss look better. Ko fights from an upright, leant-back southpaw karate stance and bounces in and out with fast straights, reading range with his hands low. His takedown entries are quick and well disguised, and his cardio holds up.

Wellington Turman: The Brazilian grappler finally returns

Wellington Turman (18-8) makes his first walk to the octagon since 2023. In between came four surgeries on his left shoulder, plus a July comeback against Islam Dulatov that was scrapped on the day of the event. He’s 3-6 in the UFC and on a three-fight skid. Turman is far more of a submission artist than striker, with eight career tap outs, but only one of his UFC wins came by submission. On the feet he’s upright and very hittable, and too often he defends by leaning back with his hands pawed out. Getting the fight to the floor is his biggest problem. His takedown accuracy sits around 20%, so he relies on dirty boxing against the fence and trips from the clinch.

Ko Seok-hyeon vs Wellington Turman prediction

The submission game is the only area where Turman looks better. Everywhere else, Ko should have the edge – he’s more elusive and faster, moves better, strikes better, and has the stronger wrestling. He’s the better wrestler, even if he isn’t the better jiu-jitsu player.

The one weakness worth watching came out in the Lebosnoyani fight. Lebosnoyani threatened front headlocks every time Ko shot, and it deterred Ko from wrestling as freely as he wanted. Turman may try something similar. If anything, he wants this fight in scrambles on the floor, where he can latch onto a submission. But he isn’t on Lebosnoyani’s level, as last weekend showed, and he’s coming off more than three years of inactivity.

On the feet Turman should be outmatched, and Ko’s distance management should be too strong for him. Expect Ko to land his southpaw cross at range and use it to set up his double legs and judo throws. Turman’s habit of leaning back carelessly will only make that easier. Expect a dominant, methodical performance from Ko, possibly a clean 30-27 sweep on the cards. Ko is a lock.

Prediction: Ko Seok-Hyeon to win by decision
