Gabriel Lorenco: “Black Mamba” brings a kill or be killed mindset
Gabriel Lorenco (8-1) earned his contract on the Contender Series in September, stopping Charlie Cleveland with an overhand, elbows and punches just two minutes in. Now he steps in on short notice for Alvin Hines. Seven of his eight wins are finishes, all in the first round. His only loss came in his pro debut against Igor Cavalcanti, who is now 14-2 and fresh off his own Contender Series win. Lorenco is an explosive kickboxer with heavy hands who fights at a ferocious pace and swarms the moment an opponent is hurt. He throws wildly with his head down and doesn’t care much about what comes back, which makes him very hittable.
Thomas Petersen: Well-rounded heavyweight who knows how to survive the storm
Thomas Petersen (11-5) is a former LFA heavyweight champion who has been a mixed bag since joining the UFC. Wins over Mohammed Usman and Don’Tale Mayes showed he can grind out results, and he edged the heavy-handed Guilherme Pat by majority decision in April. But Shamil Gaziev and Vitor Petrino both knocked him out, and Valter Walker submitted him with a calf slicer in July. On the feet he sits low in a compact stance with limited boxing, and he tends to put his head down and swing wildly in exchanges. He also fades late, so his path to victory runs almost entirely through grappling.
Gabriel Lorenco vs Thomas Petersen prediction
There are two ways this goes. Either Lorenco catches Petersen with something big early, or Petersen crafts his way to a fraud-check decision. Lorenco starts so fast and fires so wildly that he’ll either land a winging, looping shot flush on the head or empty his tank trying. Petersen hasn’t shown he can avoid that kind of damage. Gaziev, a rangy striker like Lorenco, landed straight after straight on him before putting him away, and Lorenco is a little taller and longer than Petersen. That being said, Gaziev is a lot more sharp and technical of a striker than Lorenco.
If Lorenco gasses, the fight flips. Petersen will work his patient game, tying Lorenco up against the fence, smothering him on the mat and grinding out the rounds. A late ground-and-pound stoppage is possible if Lorenco fades badly. We saw a version of this against Pat in April, when Petersen weathered the power and outworked a feared knockout artist on the scorecards. Lorenco also had only around two months’ turnaround from his Contender Series fight, so there are fair questions about his gas tank.
Petersen is a moderate favourite, which feels surprising. The fraud check is very much on the cards, but Lorenco’s best path is so clear, and Petersen so hittable, that the price on a first-round finish is worth taking.
Prediction: Gabriel Lorenco to win by KO/TKO in round one
