Jose Mauro Delano: Composed Brazilian craftsman bringing experience to a prospect battle

Jose Delano (17-3) has passed every test since arriving via the Contender Series. He outclassed Manuel Exposito over three rounds to earn his contract, then beat former KSW champion Robert Ruchala by unanimous decision on his UFC debut in April. The Brazilian Top Team product is a patient, compact striker. He works mostly out of southpaw but can switch, and mixes kicks to all three levels with body-head boxing and step-in knees, all backed by sharp head movement and lateral footwork. He’s jittery with his feints but bites on plenty himself, and his grappling is almost purely defensive.

Murtazali Magomedov: “The Highlight” has barely broken a sweat so far

Murtazali Magomedov (11-0) has spent less than three minutes in the octagon across his two appearances. He dropped Brahyam Zurcher with a jab and finished him inside two minutes on the Contender Series. Then on debut he submitted Melsik Baghdasaryan in 77 seconds with a modified twister, the first time anyone has won their UFC debut with the move. His record is a perfect split of five knockouts and six submissions. On the feet he fights orthodox bouncing in and out, stabbing knee stomps, low kicks and fast straights before he exits. He feints level changes constantly, and once he gets you down he’s hunting submissions straight away.

Jose Mauro Delano vs Murtazali Magomedov prediction

The market sees this as close to a coin flip, and you can see why. Delano is by far the most experienced opponent Magomedov has faced, and there are question marks over the Kyrgyzstan-based fighter. Baghdasaryan is a striker, not a defensive grappler, so we don’t yet know whether Magomedov’s wrestling can get through Delano’s takedown defence. We’ve also seen Delano come back from losses and improve. Magomedov has never had to face adversity.

Speed should be the deciding factor early. Magomedov’s hands are fast and his power is deceptive. The hook that finished Zurcher barely had any body behind it. Expect him to beat Delano to the punch and get out before the return comes. Delano can block those straights and answer with the body kick, and he has the timing to catch a knee on the entry, but early on Magomedov looks too quick for him to read. The level-change feints add to the problem, because the more Delano respects the shot, the more the punches land. Delano should stuff a few takedowns early, but if Magomedov gets him down, his transitions are a level above.

If this goes fifteen minutes, Delano’s composure and craft could well win him a decision. The more likely outcome is that Magomedov overwhelms him early and finds the finish, on the feet or on the mat.

Prediction: Murtazali Magomedov to win inside the distance
