Mantas Kondratavicius: High-pressure finisher still waiting for his first UFC stoppage

Mantas Kondratavicius (9-1) came into the UFC having finished all eight of his professional wins, but debutant nerves or not, he had to settle for a decision against Antonio Trocoli in London. It was still dominant: a knockdown, 70% striking accuracy and a clean sweep on the scorecards against a man who’d been finished in all three of his previous UFC outings. Kondratavicius is high-pressure from the opening bell, swings viciously in the pocket with real knockout power, and stays active with ground and pound in the clinch and on the mat. His takedowns are effective too. Plenty of early-finish merchants have gassed out on debut, so going fifteen minutes and winning every round was no small thing.

Andre Petroski: Jack of all trades, master of none, fighting for his roster spot

Andre Petroski (13-6) is a well-rounded veteran who lacks the X factor. He’s a grappler at heart, and his recent wins over Rodolfo Vieira, Dylan Budka and Josh Fremd were all ground out on the scorecards. He applies forward pressure and drags opponents down, chaining wrestling along the fence and hitting double legs in open space. The problem is durability – five of his six losses are knockouts. He arrives on a three-fight skid after a decision loss to Edmen Shahbazyan and back-to-back stoppages against Cam Rowston and Cody Brundage.

Mantas Kondratavicius vs Andre Petroski prediction

This is another setup fight for Kondratavicius. Once again he’s facing an opponent who keeps getting finished, and the question is whether he takes the opportunity this time.

He’ll be looking to apply his usual high-paced pressure from the start. Petroski likes to move forward himself, but walking into Kondratavicius’ punches is a dangerous business. The Lithuanian is the bigger man too, a couple of inches taller and longer. He can use his grappling offensively, but he’ll most likely want to keep this on the feet, where Petroski is weakest.

Petroski does have experience on his side. He has a crafty overhand he throws from both stances to set up the double leg, along with powerful hooks and crosses. If he can survive the early pressure and get his chain wrestling going on the fence, there’s a path to dragging Kondratavicius into deep waters. The trouble is that his chin has failed him repeatedly, against Rowston in round one and Brundage early in round two. And Kondratavicius’ grappling is underrated, so Petroski can’t count on simply holding him down.

Expect Kondratavicius to overwhelm him early and make the most of his second chance at a first UFC finish.

Prediction: Mantas Kondratavicius to win in round one
