Louie Sutherland: The former rugby pro finally has momentum

Former professional rugby player Louie Sutherland (11-5) built a strong regional record against modest opposition before a rocky start to UFC life, tapping to Valter Walker’s heel hook inside 90 seconds on his debut, and then being stopped by Brando Pericic inside two minutes in March. He turned it around in May though, out-wrestling Tai Tuivasa across three rounds in Perth. The Londoner fights behind decent calf kicks and a clean 1-2 at range, using feints and distance management to set up his entries, but he’s low volume and relies heavily on patience rather than output.

Jose Montanha: The Brazilian finisher who can’t see the scorecards

Jose Montanha (6-1) has been on the roster since September 2025 and still hasn’t walked to the octagon, with two separate bookings collapsing, most recently when Jhonata Diniz withdrew from their June date. There’s not a lot of tape on the man, but he has finished every single one of his pro wins, four by submission and two by knockout, with his lone defeat a decision to Richard Jacobi in 2022. At 6’4” with 79 inch reach he’s the bigger man here. He seems to just shoot with his physicality and muscle his way through positions for the submission.

Louie Sutherland vs Jose Montanha prediction

The scarcity of tape on Montanha is half the problem in reading this one. What exists suggests a fighter far more comfortable on the floor than on the feet. In his lone loss he was dropped multiple times standing, and each time he was hurt he instantly pulled guard, which tells you everything about where he wants this to be.

Sutherland has already shown he can implement his grappling to win a fight, doing exactly that to Tuivasa, dragging him down repeatedly and scrambling and reversing positions when he needed to. Where Montanha may hold the advantage on the floor, it has to be slight compared to the comfort Sutherland has shown in there. He’s also shared the cage with better and more experienced fighters than Jose, even if he’s lost to them, and against Tuivasa he proved he can stick to a game plan and grind out decisions.

Then there’s the activity. Montanha hasn’t fought since August 2025 and nobody knows what his cardio looks like across three rounds at this level. If he can’t overwhelm Sutherland with his physicality early, the second round is where this likely turns, with Sutherland starting to control the range, using his feints and distance management to land the easy calf kicks and straight shots down the middle.

Prediction: Louie Sutherland to win by decision
