Colby Thicknesse: Volkanovski’s teammate aiming to settle in
Colby Thicknesse (7-1) made his UFC debut earlier this year, stepping in on short notice to face Aleksandre Topuria, the older brother of pound-for-pound No. 1 Ilia. Though he lost a clear decision, the performance wasn’t without moments, and he showed signs of composure despite the obvious UFC jitters.
A product of Freestyle Fighting Gym in Windang, New South Wales, Thicknesse trains under Joe Lopez and is a favoured training partner of current featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski. He’s a well-rounded martial artist, known for his solid grappling and durable style, and has never been finished in his pro career.
Josias Musasa: Power puncher from the Congo looking to rebound
Josias Musasa (8-1) also tasted defeat in his UFC debut, getting submitted by Carlos Vera in round one. Prior to that, he earned his contract with a split decision win on the Contender Series. The Congolese prospect is a physical powerhouse, with seven of his eight wins coming via knockout.
Musasa has shown good defensive wrestling, but his lack of submission defence was exposed in his last bout. Still, his explosive striking, speed, and raw power make him a serious threat if he can keep the fight on the feet.
Colby Thicknesse vs Josias Musasa prediction
This feels like a classic striker vs grappler matchup for both these 26-year-olds. Thicknesse holds the edge in the grappling department and will likely look to take the fight to the mat. However, Musasa is the more dangerous striker and will be keen to prove he’s addressed the defensive flaws that cost him last time out.
If Musasa can keep it standing, his speed and power should be enough to carry him to victory — whether by knockout or decision.
Prediction: Josias Musasa to win
