Jack Jenkins: Pressure boxer looking to rebound at home
Jack Jenkins (13-4) returns to action at 31 years old, aiming to bounce back from a tough submission loss to Gabriel Santos earlier this year. Santos is a talented fighter with a well-rounded game, so the defeat doesn’t take away from Jenkins’ reputation too much. Prior to that, Jenkins scored an impressive TKO over Herbert Burns, showcasing the heavy hands and relentless pressure that make him a fan favourite.
The Australian is a crisp boxer with a dogged mentality, but can struggle when out-volumed. Still, Jenkins’ ability to apply steady pressure, work the body, and mix it up with kicks and punches makes him a dangerous opponent when he’s allowed to dictate the terms of the fight.
Ramon Taveras: Solid Striker seeking consistency
Also aged 31, Ramon Taveras (10-3) is coming off a decision loss to Davey Grant following a hard-fought split decision win over Serhiy Sidey in his UFC debut. He is now moving up a weight class, which could give him a speed advantage over naturally bigger opponents. Despite the jump, Taveras will still enjoy a one-inch height advantage at 5’8”.
Taveras is a high-output striker who brings the action and has good boxing fundamentals, often throwing in combinations to overwhelm opponents. However, his willingness to trade means he sometimes gets caught clean, which has led to him being hurt in multiple fights. If he can tighten his defence while maintaining his trademark aggression, his speed and boxing could give Jenkins problems.
Jack Jenkins vs Ramon Taveras prediction
This should be a stand-up war, with both men preferring to trade on the feet. Jenkins appears to be the more polished and defensively sound striker of the two, and he has the ability to mix it up with both hands and kicks to keep opponents guessing. With the support of the Australian crowd behind him, he should be able to edge the exchanges in what promises to be a crowd-pleasing fight.
Both fighters possess decent skills but the hometown edge and gritty mentality lean this one in Jenkins’ favour.
Prediction: Jack Jenkins to win
