Thomas Petersen vs Don’Tale Mayes prediction
After graduating from Dana White’s Contender Series back in August 2023, Thomas Petersen (9-3) has found life in the UFC somewhat challenging as he has lost two of his three fights. He comes off a TKO loss at the hands of Shamil Gaziev in February and it will be interesting to see how he responds to a knockout loss just three months ago.
He was knocking people out for fun in LFA prior to joining the UFC but that knockout power has not translated to the Octagon as yet and now he takes on Don’Tale Mayes looking to get to .500 in the promotion.
Mayes (11-8 with one no contest) also came through Dana White’s Contender Series albeit all the way back in 2019. Since joining the UFC, he has gone 4-6 with one no contest, so he too has found it difficult at this level.
He too only fought just two and a half months ago in February as he was submitted in just 77 seconds by Valter Walker. Recovering and bouncing back from that should be less onerous than Petersen’s TKO loss however.
Mayes alarming slide however is a concern and he has lost his last two fights and four of his last six. He may welcome this fight against Petersen from a stylistic perspective as the younger man is more likely to stand and trade than try take him down.
In fact, Mayes may try take this fight to the mat himself and the size difference in height and reach may work in his favour both standing and on the mat.
This fight is hugely unpredictable and we are back and forth on how we see it playing out. We marginally prefer the underdog Mayes and the value he offers but with no real confidence.
We can see this fight ending before the final bell however. Neither man possesses great skills on the ground and we see them standing and trading with a stoppage very likely.
Prediction: Fight will not go the distance
