Guilherme Uriel: "Urso" returns after a loss to Josh Hokit in his first showing
Guilherme Uriel (7-2) makes his second appearance on the Contender Series after being unfortunate enough to run into current top heavyweight contender, Josh Hokit, last season. While he’s only fought once since that contest, he produced an emphatic first round KO to right the ship and earn a shot at redemption. The Brazilian has a 100% finish rate, although he’s also been stopped himself in both of his professional losses to date. “Urso” has a grappling base but his striking is steadily developing and he has legitimate KO power.

Returning for his second shot at the Contender Series, Mario Piazzon (10-1) actually won his first fight at the Apex in 2023. However, that win came via DQ due to his opponent landing an illegal knee and “The Shark” was criticized by Dana White in the aftermath. Piazzon has scored seven wins by KO and his record looks impressive on paper, but a closer look at his resume reveals a steady diet of cans. He’s also only two fights removed from a brutal KO loss to a fighter who boasted a record of 15-39.

We’re going with the moderate favorite in Uriel here. With the benefit of hindsight, there’s no shame in losing to Josh Hokit; the American has been on an absolute tear since joining the UFC last year.
Not withstanding that result, “Urso” looks to be the more well-rounded fighter. He has also fought considerably better levels of competition than Piazzon throughout his career, producing a 5-1 record in LFA. He’s the bigger man and seemingly has more avenues to victory than Piazzon, who looks to be relying on a KO to score the victory here.
This is heavyweight, meaning that there’s always a chance that “The Shark” lands a bomb in the early goings and sends Uriel astral traveling. However, it’s hard to forget that he’s just two fights removed from getting flatlined by a fighter who has nearly forty losses by way of stoppage.
