Flavio Cobolli vs Stan Wawrinka prediction
Flavio Cobolli was handed a bye in the first-round as the top seed. His poor form continued at the Shanghai Open, as he lost in the opening round to Adrian Mannarino in three sets. That was preceded by an early loss in Beijing to Roman Safullin. There have been plenty of highlights for the Italian this season; his first Grand Slam final at Roland Garros, the semi-finals in Cincinnati and a Mexican Open title, but he has also suffered a number of early exits from a host of tournaments. He remains fifth in the Race to Turin, but his place at the year end championships isn’t confirmed as it stands.
He plays three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka. The veteran won his first tour-level match since May after a victory over Martin Landaluce in round one. Wawrinka was not broken on serve, winning 6-3 6-7 (2) 7-6 (5). The 41-year-old will retire from the sport at the Swiss Indoors in Basel next week.
Cobolli commands a perfect 2-0 lead in their head-to-head record, though both prior hard-court meetings went the distance to a deciding set. While the top seed will be heavily expected to progress, a rejuvenated Wawrinka will completely relish the grand occasion.
