Mattia Bellucci enters the Almaty Open in brilliant form, having just claimed the Challenger title in Jinan. The Italian did not drop a set on his way to the final, before capping it off with a 6-2 4-6 6-3 victory over Martin Landaluce. That was his second final of the month, following another strong run in Jingshan. Overall, he has 14 wins from his last 15 matches, including qualifiers.

Bellucci faces Tomas Martin Etcheverry in round one. His poor form continued in Shanghai as he lost in the first-round to Dalibor Svrcina. That extended his losing run to four matches in total. Aside from his fine run to the round-of-16 at the US Open, Etcheverry has lost in the opening round of his last six events in total.
