David Goffin extended his career by at least one more match after fighting back to beat Remy Bertola in the first-round of the European Open. Goffin delighted the home crowd as he recovered from 3-1 down in the deciding set to win 3-6 6-3 6-4. That was just his third win of the season, and his first on the ATP Tour. He will retire after this tournament. 

Goffin plays Alex Michelsen next. The American ended a three-match losing streak after a dominant victory over Andrea Guerrieri. Michelsen had not won a match since his run to the quarter-finals at the US Open, but the result was never in doubt on this occasion as he won 6-1 6-2. The 22-year-old will be hoping to finish the year inside the world’s top 30 to secure a seeding at the Australian Open in January. 

I expect Goffin’s career to come to an end here, with Michelsen likely to prove too strong for the 35-year-old.
