Wesley Schultz: "Party Time" looks to kickstart the celebrations

Submission specialist, Wes Schultz (9-3), needed two attempts to earn a contract on the Contender Series, succumbing to second round GNP against Mansur Abdul Malik in 2024 before scoring a highlight reel Suloev stretch in his sophomore appearance last year. Unfortunately, “Party Time” had a debut to forget, with Schultz getting dinged with a nasty first round KO from fellow Contender Series alum, Damian Pinas. He’s rebounded by beating Ben Johnston since, but that victory came with several asterisks. Not only was Schultz’s terrible striking exposed badly, but Johnston was debuting and hadn’t fought in over two years; he was still on his way to victory before Schultz caught him in a late submission.

Jackson McVey: "The Moose" attempts to maintain his current momentum

1-2 in the promotion since making the jump from LFA last year, Jackson McVey (7-2) scored his first UFC victory last time out, running through Sedriques Dumas to earn a first round submission and a performance bonus. Prior to that, “The Moose” had been submitted in both of his first two UFC bouts, getting tapped out by Brunno Ferreira and Zach Reese. Primarily a grappler, the 27 year old American is still a capable Muay Striker, typically leveraging his enormous 6’4” frame and 77” reach to enter the clinch and land damaging short shots from close range.

Wesley Schultz vs Jackson McVey prediction

Schultz has looked pretty awful throughout his UFC run to date, but I can actually see him potentially winning this one. While his striking is atrocious, his best attribute is a sneakily good submission game and both of McVey’s UFC losses have come by way of tap out.

However, whether he’s going to survive long enough to earn a Hail Mary win like he did against Ben Johnston last time out is another matter entirely. Schultz’s output and accuracy on the feet is borderline non-existent; he landed twelve strikes in three rounds last time out. McVey puts up solid striking numbers; a concerning omen considering that “Party Time” has been dropped in both of his UFC bouts to date.

However, we’re actually going to roll the dice on Schultz as a slight underdog here. While he’s the better striker of the two men, McVey is still primarily a grappler and I think that Schultz might just be better than him on the mat. “The Moose’s” weakness has historically been submissions and that’s where Schultz thrives. This isn’t just complete speculation either; the two men actually fought each other as amateurs back in 2020, with “Party Time” emerging victorious via first round armbar.

They’ve both improved since those days, but give me Schultz by submission somewhere in the first two rounds.

Prediction: Wesley Schultz to win by submission
