Shanelle Dyer: "The Nightmare" in search of another highlight reel finish

Shanelle Dyer (7-1) came up short on the Contender Series, but still impressed enough in a decision defeat to Carol Foro to earn a UFC contract. Fighting out of GB Top Team, “The Nightmare” is a striker first and foremost, channeling her background in K1 and Muay Thai into her MMA game with great effect. The 25 year old Englishwoman rebounded from her first career loss on the Contender Series to produce a successful debut, planishing Ravena Oliveira with knees and punches to score a dominant second round TKO victory and earn a performance bonus to boot.

Elise Reed: A hardened veteran in dire need of a win

Currently standing at 4-5 under the UFC banner since making the jump to the promotion as an undefeated 4-0 prospect, Elise Reed (8-5) has alternated wins and losses in the five years since. A striker with a base in Taekwondo and kickboxing, one of Reed’s biggest setbacks has been her lack of power; while she has decent output, she has yet to score a finish in four UFC victories. She’s historically proven to be a much better nail than she is a hammer, with all five of her losses in the promotion coming by way of finish.

It’s not difficult to see what the UFC wants to happen here. Dyer is a young, marketable British prospect with an exciting striking-based fight style who scored an impressive stoppage in her last fight, facing an opponent who has been finished in all five of her UFC losses to dare.

With an extensive background in Muay Thai and kickboxing, the Englishwoman is leagues ahead of Reed on the feet in terms of speed and power, as well as having the edge in both height and reach. Accordingly, the American’s best chance to win this looks to be through attempting to grapple; not exactly a promising omen considering that she’s averaged just 0.46 takedowns every 15 minutes across nine UFC fights.

Most of Reed’s UFC wins have come through outstriking her opponent across three rounds and I just don't see that happening here. More realistically, I think this is going to be a showcase for “The Nightmare” in her sophomore UFC appearance, with Dyer either finishing Reed outright or simply teeing off on her for 15 minutes to earn a lopsided decision win.
