Mahamed Aly: Grappling pedigree with thunderous KO power

Mahamed Aly (5-1) returns for his second shot at a UFC contract on the Contender Series, following a harrowing first round KO loss to Iwo Baraniewski last year. However, the best way to respond to a first round KO loss is to produce one yourself, which is exactly what Aly did in his only fight since, starching Diego Peclat with a murderous body punch. A four-time IBJJF world champion, Aly hasn’t had much call to use his grappling as of yet; he’s scored KOs in four of his five professional wins to date, including two first round head kicks.

Alik Lorenz: An explosive starter out of the blocks with a point to prove

Also returning for his sophomore bow on the Contender Series, Alik Lorenz (7-2) looks to right the wrongs of a 30 second blitzing at the hands of Abdul Rakhman Yakhyaev last August. An explosive KO artist with a 100% finish rate, the American came out with a blistering 24 second knockout in his last appearance to earn a crack at redemption. That’s not a departure from his usual style; the MMA Lab representative is an extremely aggressive, fast starter, with all but one of his wins coming in the very first round.

Mahamed Aly vs Alik Lorenz prediction

Both of these men may have lost their first appearances on the Contender Series, but that’s not to say that they’re scrubs by any means. Case in point, Baraniewski and Yakhyaev are a combined 7-0 with seven first round finishes since making the jump to the UFC.

Aly and Lorenz have both been chinned badly in the early goings, but while losing to Yakhyaev is one thing, Lorenz has also been stopped in the first round by regional level competition. Aly might have been destroyed by Baraniewski last season, but that’s his only KO loss. He’s also beaten UFC level competition before, scoring a decision victory over veteran, Jared Gooden, last year.

There’s also the matter of Aly’s grappling edge. If this doesn’t end in a first round KO, the Brazilian’s jiu jitsu is going to be light years ahead of Lorenz’s. As such, it’s easy to see him scoring a submission if this fight hits the floor, particularly considering that the American’s grappling is completely untested against an opponent of his caliber.

Lorenz could well blast Aly into oblivion in the early goings, but the Brazilian seemingly has more ways to win here. Give me Aly by submission, weathering an early storm before forcing the action to the mat and scoring the tap.

Prediction: Mahamed Aly to win by submission
