Taner Trembley: "Killemquick" looks for a short night at the office
Undefeated as an amateur and a professional with a 100% finishing rate, Taner Trembley (7-0) looks to cash in as a slight underdog and earn a UFC contract. The 31 year old Minnesota native is a slick submission artist with a particularly nasty guillotine choke, a state of affairs evidenced by five wins by tap out to his name. However, he’s also got some KO power working for him as well, earning a win by TKO in his last appearance. “Killemquick” has largely cut his teeth in LFA, beating average levels of competition without verging into pure can-crushing territory.
Roman Puga: The heavy-handed KO artist aims to add another victim to his current streak
Flawless as a professional outside of a doctor’s stoppage loss in Bellator in just his second fight, Roman Puga (5-1) enters this contest riding a four fight win streak with three first round KOs. Turning pro after going 6-2 as an amateur, Puga also has has a decent amount of professional boxing experience under his belt in addition to his burgeoning MMA career. The 27 year old pushes a blistering pace from the opening bell, looking to close distance and land ferocious combinations with heavy hands. However, while he’s looked unbeatable as of late, he only has one fairly impressive win on his young resume.
Taner Trembley vs Roman Puga prediction
This is actually a tricky one to call. The fight likely goes one of two ways; either Puga overwhelms Trembley with sheer power and aggression in the early goings, or “Killemquick” drags this into deep waters and finds a late finish.
However, while Puga is a slight favorite here, I’m actually leaning towards Trembley. He doesn’t have Puga’s one shot power on the feet, but he’s more experienced in pure MMA and has fought better levels of competition to date, putting together a six fight win streak in LFA. Puga has also fought in the same promotion, but he’s only had two fights, with one of them coming against an opponent who was 1-1.
While he’s probably going to have a striking edge, Puga has yet to face an opponent who can legitimately test him in the grappling; a concerning omen given the fact that Trembley has five wins by submission. As such, if Trembley can avoid walking into something devastating in the early goings, I think he’s going to take over as the fight goes on, leaning on his experience to find a finish somewhere in the last two rounds.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Puga manages to find the early KO, but the tentative pick is Trembley by submission.
Prediction: Taner Trembley to win by submission
