Jiri Prochazka: Can the former champion secure his latest shot at 205 pound gold?
Win, lose, or draw, there’s no UFC fighter quite like Jiri Prochazka (31-5-1). A man who strictly adheres to the code of a modern samurai, the all-action Prochazka has been must-see MMA since arriving in the UFC in 2020. He’s been perfect outside of two harrowing stoppage losses at the heavy hands of Alex Pereira, earning the UFC light heavyweight championship in a classic showdown against Glover Teixeira while also scoring highlight reel victories over top contenders in the vein of Dominick Reyes, Aleksander Rakic, and Jamahal Hill. Despite some notable defensive shortcomings in his game, Prochazka is a ruthless finisher, swarming his opponents for the KO the instant he smells blood in the water.
Khalil Rountree Jr.: "The War Horse" looks to build on the biggest win of his career last time out
Many scoffed when Khalil Rountree Jr. (14-6, 1 NC) was awarded a title shot against Alex Pereira in late 2024, only for “The War Horse” to push “Poatan” to the brink in an all-out war, vastly elevating his profile in the process. A highly technical Muay Thai striker, Rountree had some rough losses in the early goings of his UFC career, but his game has evolved to the point that he’s now universally regarded as one of the top contenders the division has to offer. The American is coming off the biggest win of his career, dominating former champion Jamahal Hill from pillar to post to earn a lopsided decision victory.
Jiri Prochazka vs Khalil Rountree Jr. prediction
Rountree is good, but until Prochazka finally loses to a fighter who isn’t called “Pereira,” I’m not picking against him.
Make no mistake, Jiri takes a LOT of damage in his fights. While he’s demonstrated improvements recently, Prochazka’s low hands and questionable head movement has historically meant that he’s extremely susceptible to taking damage.
However, putting him away has proved to be an entirely different matter. Outside of the murderous power of Alex Pereira, every fighter Prochazka has fought in the UFC ends up punching themselves out and succumbing to a late finish. Rakic, Hill, and Reyes all found success on the feet against the Czech fighter early, only to find themselves overwhelmed by his power, aggression, and tenacity as the fight progressed.
Rountree hits extremely hard, but he’s also proven to be somewhat hesitant to search for a finish when he has his opponents hurt. The man who body kicked a prone Karl Roberson like he owed him money was nowhere to be seen against Hill last time out, despite Rountree dropping the former champion badly on multiple occasions.
Rountree's technical finesse means he will likely be winning this fight right up until he isn’t. Jiri gets tuned up by the American in the early goings only to land something monstrous in the second round, ruthlessly pouring on the damage for a TKO finish.
Prediction: Jiri Prochazka to win by TKO
