Ateba Abega Gautier: Can "The Silent Assassin" score his third successive UFC stoppage?
A majorly hyped prospect at 185 pounds, the heavy handed Ateba Gautier (8-1) has the look of a future contender about him. At just 23, the Cameroonian is already 2-0 in the UFC, with both of his victories coming by way of scary first round KO. A physical powerhouse with knockout power in every limb, the hulking Gautier is an enormous middleweight, standing 6'4 with an 81' reach. "The Silent Assassin" was originally scheduled to take on the 10-3 Ozzy Diaz, securing a last minute match up against Vines to save his place on the card.
Treston Vines: Will Vines succumb to an early finish or pull off one of the upsets of the year?
Taking a debut fight against one of the UFC's scariest prospects on four days notice, Treston Vines (10-3) is clearly unafraid of a challenge. Stepping in for Ozzy Diaz at the eleventh hour, Vines arrives in the UFC with a a four fight win streak in tow, scoring stoppages in his last three outings to boot. While the American has largely fought cans throughout his professional career, he does have a few sneakily good wins on his resume. However, he's also proved susceptible to the KO in the past, something that bodes ill when faced with a striker of Gautier's power.
Ateba Abega Gautier vs Treston Vines prediction
While the American should be commended for his bravery in taking this match up on such short notice, the outcome of this one will be fairly elementary. Gautier is going knock Vines out - badly - in the very first round.
Coming up short against fighters who simply wouldn't cut it in the UFC on multiple occasions, Vines hasn't just lost to competition on the regional circuit; he's been finished by them too. The American has been knocked out in all of his professional defeats, and he's facing a prospect renowned for his aggression and murderous punching power. Vines is also at a considerable size disadvantage and is taking the fight on four days notice; we all saw what happened to Harry Hardwick at UFC Paris last month.
Having only beaten Robert Valentin and Jose Medina in his UFC tenure to date, Gautier has yet to prove that he's a truly elite prospect. However, whatever his ultimate ceiling may be, it figures to be enough to get past the likes of Vines. Barring the upset of the year, "The Silent Assassin" scores the first round highlight reel KO that the UFC have so kindly teed up for him.
Prediction: Ateba Gautier to win by TKO
