Karine Silva: Submission specialist looking to showcase evolution

Karine Silva (18-5) enters this rematch ranked #11 in the flyweight division and looking to bounce back from a decision loss to Viviane Araújo. Prior to that setback, the 31-year-old had built strong momentum with four consecutive UFC victories, three of which came by first-round submission. She now holds a 4-1 record in the promotion and has finished 94% of her career wins.

Training out of the surging Fighting Nerds gym, one of the UFC’s most exciting hubs for rising talent, Silva brings a dangerous grappling arsenal to the Octagon. Her jiu-jitsu is aggressive and effective, particularly in the early stages of a fight. That said, her cardio remains a concern, as seen in her last bout where she noticeably faded after the first round.

Dione Barbosa: Solid striker hoping to repeat history
Dione Barbosa (8-3) has alternated wins and losses across her first three UFC appearances, most recently securing a first-round submission victory over Diana Belbiţă. Before that, she dropped a decision to Miranda Maverick following her successful debut against Ernesta Kareckaite.

Notably, Barbosa holds a win over Silva from their first encounter in 2019, when she claimed a unanimous decision victory. Now 33, she brings solid striking fundamentals and decent grappling skills to the table. However, an inconsistent fight IQ has hampered her ability to impose a clear game plan, often costing her in fights. This may prove even more damaging since she is entering this fight on short notice.

Karine Silva vs Dione Barbosa prediction

Karine Silva has developed significantly since her 2019 loss to Dione Barbosa, stringing together nine consecutive wins following that defeat. Her overall skillset has evolved, and she now holds a clear advantage in the grappling department. While Barbosa may have an edge on the feet, Silva’s ability to control the fight on the ground should allow her to dictate the pace and grind out a decision victory. Training at The Fighting Nerds, she’s likely addressed the cardio issues seen in her last outing — and with the benefit of a full training camp, she’ll also hold a preparation edge over Barbosa, who steps in on short notice to replace JJ Aldrich.

Prediction: Karine Silva to win
