Tommy Paul vs Carlos Alcaraz prediction
Tommy Paul enjoyed a dominant victory in the round-of-16 of the Vienna Open after thrashing Luciano Darderi. The American required just 48 minutes to win 6-1 6-1. Paul has been very solid in recent weeks, as he advanced to the last eight at the Shanghai Masters and the last four at the Lyon Open. He will face second seed Carlos Alcaraz next.
Alcaraz eventually got past Nikoloz Basilashvili to set up a meeting with Paul. The Spaniard stormed through the first set and went an early break up in the second, but Basilashvili broke back and forced a tiebreak. An engrossing breaker saw Basilashvili spurn four set points in total, with Alcaraz eventually closing it out to win 6-1 7-6 (11).
Alcaraz leads the head-to-head 7-2 but this is their first meeting indoors. Paul won two of the first three matches between the pair, but Alcaraz has won the last six. Despite being viewed as the clear favourite, I expect him to face a stern test against the consistent Paul.
