Sorana Cirstea begins the final tournament of her career as the top seed at the Hong Kong Open. She has enjoyed an impressive campaign, highlighted by winning a title on home soil in Cluj-Napoca, thrashing Emma Raducanu in the final. She also advanced to the quarter-finals at Roland Garros for the first time since 2009, along with a run to the last four in Madrid. Her recent form has been less convincing, with early defeats in Ningbo and Tokyo to Sara Bejlek and Maya Joint respectively.

Maria Timofeeva has enjoyed a productive season, with four lower-tier singles titles, including the Istanbul WTA 125, where she beat Donna Vekic in the final. In Guangzhou last week, she defeated Teodora Kostovic in straight sets before losing a close second-round contest to Sun Xinran.
