Ugo Humbert vs Botic van de Zandschulp prediction
Ugo Humbert returns to Paris, where he will be desperate to make his mark this week. A finalist here in 2024, when he lost to Alexander Zverev, Humbert often rises to the occasion in Paris, and after missing last year’s event, the left-hander will be desperate to put on a show once again in his native France.
When Humbert gets going, he is as dangerous as any player on tour, but he is going to have to find some energy from somewhere, as his recent form has not been great. He comes off an opening-match defeat to Serbian legend Novak Djokovic and has had a string of first-match eliminations, so he comes into this tournament with little momentum behind him.
He has been handed a tough opening draw as he lines up against Botic van de Zandschulp. The Dutchman enjoyed reasonable joy on the Asian leg of the ATP Tour, reaching the round of 16 at the Shanghai Masters with wins over Daniel Merida, Alex Michelsen and Arthur Fils before losing to Rafael Jodar.
The 31-year-old will be hoping to match Humbert’s energy, and he will relish playing the bad guy in front of the French crowd. One thing he will have to overcome, however, is a terrible record against Humbert, who has won all five of their previous meetings on the ATP Tour, three of which came at Masters 1000 events and one at Wimbledon.
Their last encounter came this year in Montpellier, when Humbert won 6-3, 6-4, and Van de Zandschulp has often struggled against the left-hander. Humbert will take confidence from that, as well as energy from the home crowd, and even though form and momentum are with the Dutchman, we fancy Humbert to raise his game, rise to the occasion and get the win.
