Dayana Yastremska has struggled for consistency throughout 2026 and is currently ranked 97 in the world. She qualified for the Guangzhou Open and won her first-round match with a battling victory over Katie Volynets, overcoming her opponent in a deciding set tiebreak. However, she then lost to Han Shi. Yastremska has failed to reach a tour-level quarter-final this year, and has subsequently dropped down the rankings. 

Zeynep Sonmez also won her round one encounter in Guangzhou after defeating Sara Sorribes Tormo but then lost to Jil Teichmann. Sonmez won the first set but went on to lose 4-6 6-3 6-1. The Turk has advanced to three quarter-finals in 2026, but has failed to win back-to-back main draw matches since June.

The head-to-head is tied at 1-1, and there is little to separate the two players overall. Sonmez has been slightly more reliable over the course of the campaign, but Yastremska has the greater firepower and will look to dominate behind her first serve.
