Mario Bautista vs Patchy Mix prediction
Mario Bautista (15-2) was slated to face Marlon Vera at UFC 316 but after he withdrew three weeks ago, UFC matchmakers signed Patchy Mix to hand a different challenge to Bautista.
The 31-year-old has won his last seven bouts and he has flown up the rankings to number ten. The quality of opponents has increased by the fight with his last victory coming by split decision against veteran Jose Aldo.
The best he has faced aside from a declining Aldo is Da’Mon Blackshear and Ricky Simon and he managed to grind out unanimous decision wins over the pair but it will be interesting to see how he measures up to the UFC newcomer here.
Patchy Mix (20-1) joins the UFC from Bellator where he was the bantamweight champion. It is always difficult to assess the quality in the weaker promotions but two wins over Magomed Magomedov is impressive. Outside of that however, there is not a huge amount of quality on his 20-1 record which flatters him somewhat.
That is not to say that he cannot rise up a level and perform in the UFC, but as we have seen so many times with newcomers especially on such a big card, the Octagon nerves can affect the most experienced of fighters.
Bautista is a really good test for the newcomer here and he could well be upset. Mix is the favourite coming into this one but we cannot like that with so many unknowns. Our preference in this one is that the fight does go the distance, while we have a marginal preference on the value that Bautista offers as the underdog.
Prediction: Fight to go the distance
