Alexander Volkanovski: “The Great” looks to add another entry to an all time great resume

Widely regarded as the greatest featherweight fighter in MMA history, two-time 145 pound champion, Alexander Volkanovski (28-4), looks to turn in the second defence of his second title reign come Saturday night. A front-runner for the most well-rounded threat on the entire roster, “The Great” has one of the finest resumes in UFC history, posting wins over Max Holloway (x3), Jose Aldo, and Diego Lopes (x2); his only losses have come against the absolute elite in Islam Makhachev (x2) and Ilia Topuria. At the age of 38, Volk’s legendary durability has started to show signs of deterioration, but as his duo of fights with Lopes proved, he’s still capable of beating the cream of the crop at 145 pounds.

Movsar Evloev: Can Evloev maintain his undefeated record and collect UFC gold?

Undefeated across twenty fights as a pro, Movsar Evloev (20-0) gets a much overdue shot at 145 pound gold, having won ten fights in a row under the UFC banner since joining the promotion back in 2019. While he’s often been criticized for his lack of finishes - Evloev has yet to post a stoppage in the UFC - the Russian has underlined his status as one of the best fighters in the featherweight shark tank with wins over the likes of Arnold Allen, Aljamain Sterling, and Lerone Murphy to name but a few. Evloev’s smothering pressure and seamless chain wrestling means that he does his best work on the ground, but he’s also an extremely solid, technical striker.

Alexander Volkanovski vs Movsar Evloev prediction

Volkanovski is undoubtedly in the twilight of his career, but we’re still riding with “The Great” here.

Simply put, the only fighters who have been able to best Volkanovski decisively are the ones who are able to nail him to the canvas. Evloev actually has pretty underrated striking, but he has yet to score a knockdown in ten UFC fights, let alone a KO. Volk’s chin has regressed, but he’s also just won two fights in a row against arguably the heaviest hitter in the division, Diego Lopes. He may very well get wobbled or dropped in this fight, but I don’t think that Evloev has what it takes to put his lights out.

The Russian is an excellent grappler, but Volkanovski has avoided the submission against with considerably more dangerous ground fighters. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Evloev score takedowns in this fight, but Volkanovski has proven almost impossible to hold down throughout his career. The only man who even came close was Islam Makhachev, a considerably bigger and more talented grappler than Evloev, who also posed much more of a submission threat.

In short, I think that this one takes the form of a vintage Volkanovski performance, with the Aussie leaning on his output and footwork in the striking and fighting his way back to the feet if and when he gets grounded to win a hard fought decision. There’s always the chance that this proves to be the one where the wheels fall off for “The Great” but I won’t believe it until I see it.

Prediction: Alexander Volkanovski to win by decision
