Abusupiyan Magomedov: Elite fighter operated like a stopwatch
Abus Magomedov (29-7-1) came into the UFC as a hot prospect and was thrown straight into the deep end. After a 19-second knockout of Dustin Stoltzfus on debut, he was handed Sean Strickland in his second outing. He battered the now two-time champion for a round before fading and being stopped in the second. His only other UFC losses came against Caio Borralho and Joe Pyfer, and he bounced back in June with a first-round guillotine of Michal Oleksiejczuk. He’s a sharp, powerful, dynamic striker with a dangerous submission game. His arm-triangle was the first time Brunno Ferreira had ever been submitted. If it weren’t for his cardio, he’d be one of the best middleweights in the division.
Cameron Rowston: “Battle Giraffe” riding a seven fight win streak
Cam Rowston (15-3) is 3-0 in the UFC. He stopped Andre Petroski and Cody Brundage before sweeping all three scorecards against Robert Bryczek in May. He hasn’t lost since a Contender Series defeat to Torrez Finney in 2024. Rowston is a rangy kickboxer with decent distance management and slow hands, but his punches come from wide, unexpected angles. On the mat he scrambles well and finds the back with ease. Six of his seven submissions came by rear-naked choke, plus a calf slicer. He can be taken down fairly easily, though, and gets pushed back to the fence. What he does have is a deep gas tank and that dog in him. He keeps chasing the finish as the rounds go on.
Abusupiyan Magomedov vs Cameron Rowston prediction
The question here isn’t who’s better. Abus is the more skilled fighter everywhere, with a big edge in experience and level of competition. Rowston simply hasn’t faced anyone close to the calibre of Strickland, Borralho or Pyfer. The question is whether Abus can get it done before his tank runs dry.
These two have near-identical frames. Both stand tall at 6’2” and 6’3”, with 78 inch reaches, so Rowston loses the typical length advantage that makes his striking so effective against shorter opponents. Abus is sharper and more powerful on the feet, and he should be able to put Rowston on his back early if he wants.
Rowston’s BJJ is good, but his wrestling isn’t strong enough to drag Abus down while he’s fresh. With 14 knockouts and 16 first-round finishes, Abus is as dangerous as anyone in the division in the opening five minutes.
The danger comes if this drags into the later stages of round two. Fading early has been a common trend in Abus’s UFC career. Rowston is exactly the type to capitalise on that, with a gas tank that doesn’t empty and a scrambling game that finds the back. If Abus doesn’t find the finish early, Rowston could take over and even finish him late.
I just think Abus is a level above and the skill gap is too big to ignore, he should get it done before the second half of the fight even arrives.
Prediction: Abus Magomedov to win in round one
