Lone’er Kavanagh: Can Kavanagh show levels and prove he belongs at the top of the division?
3-2 across his first five fights in the UFC, Lone’er Kavanagh (10-2) has gone from unranked Contender Series graduate to one of the most highly regarded flyweights in the division in the space of just over two years. A highly explosive athlete with superb striking and well-timed bursts of offensive wrestling, the GB Top Team standout began his tenure in the promotion at 3-0, before suffering a rough KO loss to Charles Johnson. He would rebound with an impeccable decision victory over former champion, Brandon Moreno, to confirm his status as a top flyweight, before suffering an upset submission loss to Brandon Royval in his most recent contest.
Ramazan Temirov: Does Temirov collect another highlight reel KO and vault into title contention?
Fresh off a destructive KO over former title challenger, Steve Erceg, Ramazan Temirov (20-2) looks to be the next big thing at 125 pounds. 3-0 in the promotion with two KOs and performance bonuses, the fire hydrant-esque Uzbekistan fighter hits like a mack truck considering the weight class that he operates in, a state of affairs underlined by twelve KO victories to his name. On paper, the only real knock against “Temurlan” is the fact that he spent an extended period of time on the sidelines prior to returning against Erceg, after popping for PEDs in the lead up to a planned fight against Asu Almabayev.
Lone’er Kavanagh vs Ramazan Temirov prediction
Pitting two of the division’s most explosive athletes against one another, this looks like a lock for Fight of the Night.
While he’s a slight underdog, I’m leaning towards Kavanagh to rebound here. Many will point to the Charles Johnson KO loss as evidence that the heavy handed Temirov is just going to bomb him out cold, but I would argue that loss came down to poor stamina management rather than a technical shortcoming on his part.
The Brit has clearly learned from that loss, demonstrating a much better ability to manage his gas tank against Brandon Moreno and Brandon Royval. While he also does his best work on the feet, Kavanagh is arguably more well-rounded than Temirov. He isn’t afraid to mix in takedowns, and while Temirov has yet to be taken down in the UFC, he hasn’t been taking on fighters known for their wrestling prowess.
Temirov is clearly incredibly dangerous; there’s a significant chance that he catches Kavanagh with something murderous in the early goings and puts him away. However, I believe that the GB Top Team representative has what it takes to match him for athleticism, holding his own on the feet and using well timed bursts of wrestling to sap the Uzbekistan native’s power. Once Temirov starts to slow down, I envision Kavanagh gradually taking over in the striking exchanges en route to a thrilling decision victory.
Prediction: Lone'er Kavanagh to win by decision
