Kelvin Gastelum vs Joe Pyfer prediction

Kelvin Gastelum (19-9 with one no contest) returns to action after almost one year out and he will be hoping to pick up back-to-back wins in the UFC for the first time since 2017/18 when he beat Michael Bisping and Ronaldo Souza. He is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Daniel Rodriguez last June and that was much needed as he had lost six of his previous eight bouts.

Gastelum’s days at the top end of the division are clearly gone but he remains a solid test for any up and coming fighter and it will be interesting to see how much he has left in the tank here.

He comes up against Joe Pyfer (13-3) who has been on a tear in the last few years having racked up six wins in his last seven fights. His only came via unanimous decision at the hands of Jack Hermansson in February last year but he bounced back nicely knocking out Marc-Andre Barriault at UFC 303 a year ago.

Pyfer has serious knockout power and nine of his 13 wins have come via KO/TKO. Gastelum however has never been knocked out and he has an incredible chin and heart. He is however becoming easier to hit and Pyfer will enjoy some success while Gastelum’s best chance is to get him on the mat.

We do not see him being able to keep Pyfer at bay for the whole 15 minutes. Expect Pyfer to connect enough times to rock Gastelum and while he may not get the knockout, he should do enough to get the decision.

Prediction: Joe Pyfer to win by decision or KO/TKO
