Nathaniel Wood: Perpetually underrated veteran has seen this one before
Nathaniel Wood (22-6) has quietly become one of the most consistent featherweights in the UFC, going 6-1 since moving up from bantamweight with his only loss being a competitive decision to Muhammad Naimov. The 32-year-old Londoner enters on a three-fight win streak, most notably handing Jose Delgado his first professional defeat at UFC 321 in a closely contested decision. Wood has made a habit of neutralising dynamic finishers - both Delgado and Morgan Charriere carried significant hype into their bouts against him and both left with losses. He's a technical kickboxing counter puncher who scores well with leg kicks at range and has decent wrestling to fall back on. The concern is that his ground control isn't elite, and he's been rocked and knocked down by multiple opponents throughout his career, though he hasn't been stopped in the past 6 years.
Losene Keita: Explosive Oktagon double champ making his long-awaited debut
Losene Keita (16-1) is one of the most anticipated and terrifying European prospects to enter the UFC in recent years. The 28-year-old held both featherweight and lightweight titles simultaneously in Oktagon MMA with his only loss coming via foot injury, he avenged that loss with a knockout in the rematch. Originally scheduled to debut at UFC Paris last September, a three-pound weight miss against Patricio Pitbull scrapped the bout in embarrassing fashion. This man truly fights like his "Black Panther" nickname - a coiled spring who stalks opponents before exploding with devastating counters. He carries raw punching power that exceeds anyone Wood has faced, and is at his most dangerous when he has opponents backed onto the fence. His volume isn't high, as he picks his moments to unload rather than sustaining output.
Nathaniel Wood vs Losene Keita prediction
This is a high-level fight and frankly, it's surprising that its not on the main card. The matchup comes down to whether Wood's technical discipline can survive Keita's explosive power. Keita holds clear advantages in size, with six inches in height and a few inches in reach, as well as raw knockout ability. His counter-punching power is a level above what Wood has had to face before, and he's most dangerous when stalking opponents onto the fence, something Wood will need to be aware of, using lateral movement to avoid being trapped.
Wood has consistently proven he can neutralise dynamic finishers with his ring craft, but is Keita just too much? His leg kicks at range will be a smart weapon against Keita's wide stance, and they'll be crucial for scoring points across the three rounds. Wood should also threaten the takedown, a couple takedowns will make Keita use his explosive energy to get back up, which will play into Wood's favour later into the fight.
As exciting as this matchup is, there's a chance this starts as a slow-burning chess match, with both fighters looking to counter before the pace ramps up. The key factor is Keita's cardio, against Agy Sardari, his explosiveness faded in the later rounds when he couldn't find the finish, and his best defence is his insanely fast-twitch offence. Although I think Wood has the tools to pull off the upset, the safer call is definitely to side with the Black Panther.
Prediction: Losene Keita to win by KO/ TKO
