Movsar Evloev: Can the Russian standout cement his case for a shot at Alexander Volkanovski's title?

Perfect across nineteen professional MMA bouts to date, it seems inevitable that Movsar Evloev (19-0) will eventually challenge for UFC gold. Entering his first main event spot with the promotion with a UFC record of 9-0, Evloev has earned wins over the likes of Diego Lopes, Aljamain Sterling, and Arnold Allen to underline his credentials as one of the best fighters in the division. A grinding wrestler with sublime scrambling ability and an underrated boxing game, the only knock against the Russian is his lack of finishing potential; Evloev has yet to earn a UFC stoppage despite joining the promotion with seven finishes in his first nine fights.

Lerone Murphy: Will "The Miracle" play spoiler and capitalize on a KOTY contender in his last appearance?

Fresh off a KOTY contender spinning elbow finish over Aaron Pico at UFC 319 last August, Lerone Murphy (17-0-1) puts his undefeated record on the line once again in the hopes of finally earning a title shot. Outside of a hard fought draw in his debut against Zubaira Tukhugov, “The Miracle” has passed every test the UFC has thrown at him, scoring victories over Josh Emmett, Dan Ige, and Edson Barboza to name but a few in the process. A technical striker who possesses a notably well-rounded MMA skillset, Murphy’s UFC record currently stands at 9-0-1, a run that includes finishes over Ricardo Ramos, Makwan Amirkhani, and the aforementioned Pico.

Movsar Evloev vs Lerone Murphy prediction

Pitting two unbeaten fighters against each other with a potential title shot on the line, this is one of the best Fight Night main events that the UFC has thrown together in a long time.

Evloev is a moderate favorite here with good reason. While his inactivity and lack of finishes have hurt his standing with the more casual side of the fanbase, the Russian easily has the more impressive resume of the two fighters. Murphy’s best win is over Josh Emmett, a win that is aging more poorly by the day in light of “CCO’s” deterioration over the last year.

Murphy’s takedown defense is the main concern here. “The Miracle” has been consistently grounded by multiple opponents who aren’t renowned as the best grapplers in the division, a concerning sign when faced with a wrestler of the Russian’s caliber. Evloev isn’t immune to the threat of takedowns himself, but he’s only ever been legitimately troubled by Mike Grundy and Aljamain Sterling; a Commonwealth freestyle wrestling medalist and a former UFC champion renowned for his grappling prowess respectively.

Moreover, many fans have been quick to label Murphy as a deadly KO artist in the wake of his finish over Pico, but that was only the second walk off finish of his entire career. Pico has always been renowned for suspect defense and had been flatlined on multiple occasions by much less talented fighters; hardly the indication that Murphy is about to starch the undefeated Evloev in a similar manner.

Ultimately, this will be a competitive but decisive victory for the Russian. The pick is Evloev by decision.

Prediction: Movsar Evloev to win by decision
