Michael Page: "MVP" returns to welterweight after an impressive run at 185 pounds

Dropping back down to welterweight for the first time since a defeat to Ian Garry at UFC 303 following a 2-0 run at 185 pounds, Michael “Venom” Page (24-3) looks to push his UFC record to 4-1 since debuting in the promotion in early 2024. Blessed with preternatural timing, accuracy, and distance management, “MVP” was known for his highlight reel KOs during the early days of his career, before morphing into arguably the most elite point striker in MMA today. While he’s demonstrated notable holes in his grappling, Page tends to make anybody who engages in a standup war with him look nothing short of silly in short order, effortlessly dominating the striking exchanges in all of his UFC bouts to date.

Sam Patterson: The English finisher looks to add Page's scalp to his current streak of stoppages

Losing his UFC debut via devastating first round KO to Yanal Ashmouz back in 2023, few could have predicted the resulting resurgence of Sam Patterson (14-2-1). The 29 year old Englishman is 4-0 since that setback, a run that includes a 100% first round finishing rate. An enormous welterweight for the division at 6’3 with a 78’ reach, Patterson is a bona-fide finisher, having only ever required the judges’ scorecards once in victory. He’s known for an excellent submission game but has recently showcased his KO power, scoring back to back knockouts in his two most recent appearances.

Michael Page vs Sam Patterson prediction

Who on earth is managing Page’s career?

This fight makes absolutely no sense. Page is 3-1 overall against solid UFC names and had built legitimate momentum at middleweight with successive wins over Shara Magomedov and Jared Cannonier, only to find himself dropping back down to 170 pounds to face an unranked opponent.

Patterson is a quality prospect, rebounding from a disastrous debut with a four fight finish streak. However, he’s still unranked after five fights in the promotion and the level of competition that he’s been beating does not do much to convince me that he has what it takes to solve Page’s unique puzzle, particularly if this one ends up being contested primarily on the feet.

With that being said, “MVP” has largely looked completely incapable of working his way back to his feet when opponents have successfully grounded him. Patterson is a solid grappler; it’s not inconceivable that he wrestles heavy to find openings for a submission or simply blankets Page for three rounds en route to a decision.

However, Page has decent takedown defense and has successfully shucked off wrestling from better opponents than Patterson throughout his career. As such, the most likely outcome seems to be “MVP” pot shotting and emoting at range to earn a decision, potentially landing a knockdown or a huge shot in the early stages to sway the judges further. Patterson could potentially steal the final frame with a takedown as Page tires, but the pick is “MVP” by decision.

Prediction: Michael Page to win by decision
