Iwo Baraniewski: Unbeaten knockout artist looks to make a statement
Iwo Baraniewski (7-0) has been one hell of an exciting addition to the light heavyweight division. The Polish national needed just 20 seconds to stop Mahamed Aly on the Contender Series, slipping a jab and firing a rocket of a straight onto the chin for the finish. His UFC debut against Ibo Aslan at UFC 323 was a minute and a half war that earned Fight of the Night - Baraniewski got dropped early, recovered instantly, and came back to finish Aslan with a composed right hook. He fights with a low, coiled stance and looks to fire his right hand over his opponent's jab. All seven professional wins have come inside the first round. The concern is that he can be extremely wild and defensively irresponsible in exchanges, but his chin has held up so far, and his recovery speed has been remarkable.
Austen Lane: Athletic former NFL star struggling to find his footing in MMA
Austen Lane (13-7, 1 NC) is a former NFL defensive end who was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2010 before transitioning to MMA. The 6'6" heavyweight is dropping down to light heavyweight for the first time after a rough UFC run at 265 pounds, he's 1-4 in the promotion with his only win being over, now cut from the UFC, Robelis Despaigne. Lane has been finished early by Vitor Petrino, Mario Pinto, Jhonata Diniz, and Justin Tafa, with a consistent pattern of being clipped by fighters smaller than him due to poor defensive awareness and a lack of head movement. Lane does carry decent power and fast hands when he chooses to enter, but he becomes dangerously irresponsible when he starts to feel confident.
Iwo Baraniewski vs Austen Lane prediction
Lane has been used as a step-up fighter time and again in the UFC, and there's little to suggest this time will be different. He's been finished early at heavyweight by fighters with less precision than Baraniewski, and the move down to light heavyweight will likely do his chin no favours.
The pattern across Lane's losses is clear and consistent, he gets caught clean by fighters smaller than him because he enters exchanges with zero defensive awareness, drops his hands when he feels confident, and lacks any meaningful head movement. Against a fighter like Baraniewski, who sits low and coiled ready to fire his rear hand over the jab, those habits are a recipe for another early finish.
The only caveat is that Baraniewski can be wild himself. The Aslan fight showed he's capable of getting caught, he was dropped before recovering and finishing the fight. Lane does carry power in his hands, and if Baraniewski charges in recklessly, there's a slim chance of a fraud check. But Baraniewski's recovery speed and chin have held up so far, and once he composes himself, his straight finds the target with accuracy.
The odds feel a bit steep for the risk involved given Baraniewski's wildness, but let's not overthink this one. Lane has been put away too many times for this to end any different.
Prediction: Iwo Baraniewski to win by TKO/KO in round one
