Mandel Nallo: Can the artist formerly known as "Rat Garbage" score his first UFC win?
A veteran of Bellator, Mandel Nallo (14-3, 1 NC) made quite the impression in his Contender Series bow in September, flatlining Cage Warriors champion, Samuel Silva, to earn a contract as a slight underdog. A kill or be killed fighter, “Mango” has never been to the judges’ scorecards once in eighteen fights as a professional, either scoring the finish or going out on his shield in the process. A long time pupil of Firas Zahabi, the rangy Canadian is no spring chicken at 36, but still makes his promotional debut riding a five fight win streak that includes five nasty stoppages.
Jai Herbert: "The Black Country Banger" touches down in enemy territory in search of a Canadian scalp
Best known for nearly becoming the first man to beat Ilia Topuria courtesy of a vicious head kick, Jai Herbert (13-6-1) is poised to make his tenth walk to the Octagon on Saturday night. A former champion in Cage Warriors, “The Black Country Banger” has fought some solid levels of competition throughout his time in the promotion, facing the likes of Renato Moicano, Fares Ziam, and L’udovit Klein in addition to the aforementioned “El Matador.” While he’s a serviceable grappler, Herbert is best known as a heavy handed striker, leveraging his long frame to land spiteful shots at range.
Mandel Nallo vs Jai Herbert prediction
Nallo is a great personality with a fun fighting style, but he’s also 36 years old. His win on the Contender Series came as a pleasant surprise, but surprise it was, considering that “Mango” had been fighting a steady string of cans on the regional scene leading up to that fight. Even in his Bellator days, he had an unfortunate habit of getting smoked as soon as he faced anybody vaguely decent.
Herbert may only be 3-5-1 in the promotion to date, but he’s only ever lost to solid levels of competition in the UFC. Chris Padilla and Fares Ziam are both currently on excellent runs and they’re the only two men to beat “The Black Country Banger” since Ilia Topuria. The Wolverhampton native may have been finished three times in his first five fights with the promotion but all of those defeats came to respectable names; Francisco Trinaldo is the only non-title challenger to stop Herbert, and he was regarded as one of the tougher tests outside of the rankings for the majority of his UFC tenure.
Nallo is a kill or be killed fighter, and if he’s unable to find the finish, I’m not convinced in his ability to win a decision across three rounds. Herbert leans on his edge in experience and slight size advantage to earn a hard fought decision.
Prediction: Jai Herbert to win by decision
