Jamie Siraj: "The Gremlin" makes his UFC debut on short notice
Tristar representative, Jamie Siraj (14-3) makes his UFC debut in front of his home crowd, entering the promotion riding a two fight submission streak. While “The Gremlin” has put together a solid resume on the regional scene, he’s unfortunately best known for coming out on the wrong end of a highlight reel spinning wheel kick against former UFC alum, Diego Brandao. Earning multiple regional championships and scoring eleven finishes in fourteen wins as a pro, Siraj enters the promotion on relatively short notice to make up the numbers on another dismal Fight Night card.
John Yannis: Can "Angel" rebound following a brutal short notice debut?
The UFC did John Yannis (9-4) no favors in his short notice debut, matching him up against Austin Bashi. Things played out exactly as you would expect for an eleventh hour, stylistic nightmare debut against a hyped prospect, with Yannis getting taken down and choked out in the space of less than a round. Primarily a striker, the former Fury FC featherweight champion clearly has some power in his fists, scoring KOs in five of his nine professional wins. However, with his two most recent losses both coming by way of submission, Yannis’ jiu-jitsu appears to be his Achilles heel.
Jamie Siraj vs John Yannis prediction
Yannis had absolutely nothing for Austin Bashi last time out in his short notice debut, and even with more preparation behind him this time around, I don’t expect things to play out much differently here.
Siraj may not be the physical specimen that Bashi is, but he’s proven himself capable of finishing fighters who are arguably on a similar level to Yannis on the regional circuit. He’s got a significant advantage in the grappling department, has excellent cardio, and doesn’t even look to be too out of his depth on the feet; his viral defeat to Brandao was the only time he’s ever been knocked out in nearly twenty fights as a pro.
Yannis does have some KOs from his time on the regional scene, but they haven’t come over any fighters that suddenly convince me that he’s a lock to land a bomb here. Accordingly, I see Siraj hanging tough on the feet and wearing on the American to find openings to work his grappling. He could conceivably get chinned in the process, but I like him to eventually find a submission at some point during the later stages of the fight.
Prediction: Jamie Siraj to win by submission
