Kyler Phillips: Can "The Matrix" fight his way back into the rankings at 135 pounds?

After beginning his UFC career at 6-1 with wins over the likes of Song Yadong and Raoni Barcelos, many had MMA Lab standout, Kyler Phillips (12-4), marked as a dark horse contender at 135 pounds. However, “The Matrix” has hit a wall as of late, coughing up back-to-back losses to Rob Font and Vinicius Oliveira; two defeats that have not aged particularly well. At his best, Phillips is an elusive striker with slick movement and stance switches who can mix in well-timed bursts of offensive wrestling, but he’s also been prone to hesitancy and lapses in fight IQ throughout his career to date.

Charles Jourdain: Will "Air" score the biggest win of his bantamweight campaign to date?

A UFC competitor since 2019, Charles Jourdain (17-8-1), went 6-7-1 at featherweight before a second round TKO loss to Jean Silva prompted him to drop a weight class back in late 2024. “Air” has been nothing of a revelation since dropping down to 135 pounds, scoring back-to-back POTN winning guillotine submissions over Victor Henry and Davey Grant respectively, the latter of which was punctuated by one of the nastiest flying knees in recent memory. A dynamic striker who likes to march forward relentlessly and engage in technical brawls, Jourdain’s fighting style and personality has seen him become a fan favorite with large swathes of the UFC fandom.

Kyler Phillips vs Charles Jourdain prediction

Pitting two all-action strikers against each other, this is a cracking fight on paper. Phillips might have plummeted out of the Top 15 following his two most recent defeats, but he’s the perfect litmus test on the cusp of the rankings to see whether the streaking Jourdain is ready for bigger and better things.

My money is on “yes.” While it’s easy to get carried away with recency bias, Jourdain has looked sensational at his new weight class. The biggest knock against the Canadian at featherweight was his lack of stopping power, but he’s scored dominant finishes against solid competition in his first two appearances at 135 pounds; nobody has ever done Davey Grant like that.

By contrast, Phillips has looked flat and tentative in his last two appearances, dropping results to a pair of fighters whose subsequent performances in the promotion have fallen off a cliff. Jourdain’s physicality as a former featherweight will also likely play a part here, allowing him to wear on the American in any grappling exchanges after slowing down his elusive movement with chopping low kicks.

Jourdain’s finish streak comes to an end here, but he still looks to be the clear pick to earn a hard fought decision and continue his bantamweight renaissance.

Prediction: Charles Jourdain to win by decision
