Gilbert Burns: What does the former title challenger have left in the tank after a long career fighting nothing but the best?
A mainstay of the welterweight division since making the jump from lightweight permanent almost a decade ago, Gilbert Burns (22-9) has fallen on rough times as of late. A battle hardened veteran who has fought the very best that the 170 pound shark tank has to offer, “Durinho” enters this matchup riding a four fight losing streak, wilting under first round punches from Michael Morales in his most recent appearance. While he’s one of the most highly decorated jiu-jitsu practitioners in the welterweight division, Burns is known for his powerful hands and willingness to engage in a brawl, although his chin has shown signs of deterioration in his most recent appearances.
Mike Malott: Will this hometown main event prove to be Malott's "Proper" coming out party?
While he’s still best known for his stunning capitulation against Neil Magny at UFC 297, Mike Malott (13-2-1) hasn’t let one of the most notorious fumbles in UFC history slow him down too badly in his promotional career to date. Indeed, “Proper” is perfect outside of his come-from-behind loss to “The Haitian Sensation,” posting a 6-1 record with four finishes after earning a UFC contract on the Contender Series. The Canadian is an notably well-rounded competitor; he’s got some solid pop in his hands and is an excellent grappler should the action end up hitting the mat.
Gilbert Burns vs Mike Malott prediction
Gilbert Burns is one of the most beloved and respected fighters in welterweight history. With that being said, he shouldn’t be anywhere near a main event spot in big 2026.
While he’s faced nothing but killers throughout his time at 170 pounds, “Durinho” is 1-4 across his last five fights, with his sole victory coming over the bloated remains of Jorge Masvidal more than three years ago. He’s suffered a number of nasty KO losses and it’s evident in the way he fights now; the brawler who went to war with Khamzat Chimaev is no more, replaced with a fighter who is clearly wary of taking further damage.
On the other side of the cage, Malott is never going to contend at 170 pounds but he should have enough to get past the Brazilian at this point in the game. Notwithstanding Burns’ dismal run of recent form, the Canadian is extremely well-rounded, has considerably less miles on the clock, and even has a significant size and reach advantage over the former title challenger. Throw in his current levels of momentum with the home crowd advantage, and this is a no brainer.
There’s a solid argument to be made that the “Durinho” of old would have had his way with the Canadian, but those days are long gone. Malott flattens Burns with punches somewhere in the first two rounds to score the biggest win of his career and launch his name into the rankings.
Prediction: Mike Malott to win by TKO
