Max Holloway vs Dustin Poirier prediction
Max Holloway (26-8) is coming off a loss to champion Ilia Topuria in a failed title challenge for the featherweight belt but he now defends his BMF belt against Dustin Poirier.
Holloway had been on something of a tear prior to that loss winning five of his previous six fights including one against Justin Gaejthe where he knocked him out with just one second left of the five-rounder to win the symbolic BMF belt.
It has been quite a run for Holloway who may now be fancying his own chances of another title shot after Topuria vacated and moved up.
Dustin Poirier (30-9 with one no contest) has already announced that this will be his final fight regardless of the outcome.
He has been in a series of wars for years and he is laying down his gloves at the right time.
He comes into this off a failed title bid for the lightweight belt against Islam Makhachev last June but he has been persuaded to fight for one final time to complete a trilogy against Holloway.
The pair met back on April 2019 and it was Poirier who won a decision at UFC 236. Going back to UFC 143 in February 2012, it was Holloway who grabbed the submission victory. Over 13 years after their first fight, and six years after their second, the duo get it on one last time.
This has Fight of the Night written all over it and promises to be yet another all-out war between the pair.
We favour Holloway in this one for multiple reasons. It is never easy to favour a retiring fighter and one simply has to question their mindset and preparation for such a fight.
Poirier is one who cannot really be doubted from that perspective but there is a reason why he is retiring and it is the punishment he has taken.
There will be no easy win here and both will go to deep waters. Holloway is the one who has shown more quality in recent bouts and is the one with more hunger, so for those reasons, we expect him to emerge with the W.
Prediction: Max Holloway to win
