Spirits should be high at Barnsley, who are hoping for some repeat magic this season, hence the reappointment of Daniel Stendel as head coach, the German having guided them to League One promotion back in 2018-19. They face a Wigan Athletic team with a head coach of their own who recently returned following a League One promotion winning stint in charge years prior. Gary Caldwell was key to Latics surviving relegation after joining from Exeter City in the second half of last season.
This season will likely be a struggle for Wigan with key players having left the club such as goalkeeper Sam Tickle and striker Joe Taylor, whose goals whilst on loan at Huddersfield were pivotal. Replacing them won’t be easy and it would be no surprise to see a lack of potency from the visitors here and ultimately, a Tykes victory.
