Alex Michelsen faces a generational tussle in his next match in Houston having reached the second round by winning a clash of the young pretenders with Leaner Tien.
The fifth seed outclassed his 19-year-old fellow American – and good friend – 6-4 6-2 in the first round as Tien’s maiden tour-level match on clay ended in disappointment.
Michelsen was delighted with his serve and all-round game as he hit seven aces, 27 winners and converted four of eight break opportunities.
It sets him up nicely for a third ATP Tour meeting with Adrian Mannarino a 36-year-old who is 16 years his senior.
This will be their first encounter on clay with the French veteran winning their first match on grass in the Newport final two years before Michelsen got some semblance of revenge in Mallorca last year.
Mannarino endured a ten-match losing streak earlier in the year and lost in Houston qualifying to Corentin Denolly. However, Nicolas Moreno de Alboran’s late withdrawal handed him a chance as a lucky loser and he made the most of it with a 7-6 6-3 victory over Yannik Hanfmann.
Mannarino saved 12 of the 14 break points he faced and converted all three that he created, demonstrating a grit and efficiency that has been missing for some months.
He’ll need that and more in this upcoming encounter and it’s hard to see Michelsen passing up the opportunities Hanfmann did, with the American’s big-hitting game making him a strong favourite to progress.
