Song Yadong: "The Kung Fu Kid" looks to add another elite scalp to his resume
Widely regarded as one of the toughest outs in the bantamweight division, it’s hard to believe that Song Yadong (22-9-1, 1 NC) is still only 28 years old, having fought a murderer’s row of competition during his time in the promotion. A powerful boxer with thudding low kicks who likes to mix in well-timed bursts of offensive wrestling, Song has largely beaten anybody who isn’t a legitimate title threat at 135 pounds, to the tune of an 11-4-1 record under the UFC banner; Kyler Phillips is the only man to beat “The Kung Fu Kid” who hasn’t gone on to hold or challenge for the bantamweight strap. He was last seen dropping a razor close decision to Sean O’Malley at UFC 324, with many arguing he had done enough to earn the judges’ nod.
Deiveson Figueiredo: What does "Deus de Guerra" have left in the tank at this point in his career?
Two time UFC flyweight champion, Deiveson Figueiredo (25-6-1) seemingly took to his new division at 135 pounds like a duck to water with three consecutive victories, only for his momentum to come screeching to a halt as he’s run into the elite of the division. “Deus de Guerra” is just 1-3 since, dropping clear cut losses to Petr Yan, Cory Sandhagen, and Umar Nurmagomedov last time out, with just a single victory over Montel Jackson in that time. A heavy-handed striker with an opportunistic submission game, Figueiredo’s recent appearances have fallen off a cliff as of late; the Brazilian has looked gun-shy and tentative, willing to drop rounds in the hopes that a single counter shot might win him the fight.
Song Yadong vs Deiveson Figueiredo prediction
Deiveson Figueiredo is one of the greatest fighters the lower weight classes has ever seen. With that being said, Song is likely going to beat the brakes off him here.
There’s no getting away from it; Figgy has looked absolutely dismal against elite level competition in recent years, spending the vast majority of his fights backing up as his opposition tee off on him. A solitary blitz towards the back end of each round serves as his sole form of offense, a blitz that typically fails to even land on his advancing opponent.
That’s not going to cut it against Song, a more powerful, aggressive striker who can also mix in the grappling where he needs to. If he does choose to wrestle, don’t count on Figueiredo making much of an attempt to get back up. “Deus de Guerra” is much more likely to stall out the action attempting submissions from the bottom, not a promising sign considering that Song has never been tapped out and Figgy’s last submission victory came more than five years ago.
Figueiredo could conceivably survive to see the scorecards were this three rounds, but I think that Song is going to break him before the final bell in a five rounder. “The Kung Fu Kid’s” clubbing hooks and chopping low kicks are eventually going to take their toll, resulting in a later rounds TKO.
Prediction: Song Yadong to win by TKO
