Daniel Barez: Sharp Spaniard boxer with submission threats
Daniel Barez (17-7) sits at 1-2 in the UFC, with his last fight being a loss after a third-round submission loss to undefeated prospect Andre Lima. Before that the Spaniard picked up his only promotional win against Victor Altamirano at UFC Paris in 2024. Barez fights out of orthodox with sharp boxing combinations that mix head and body well, and complements his hands with calf kicks at range. Barez gets caught over the top of his lead hand quite a bit, doesn’t check kicks himself, and at 37, age is starting to creep up on a man competing in the UFC’s most demanding division.
Luis Gurule: Decorated Colorado wrestler still searching for his first UFC win
Luis Gurule (10-3) heads into this weekend’s fight still searching for his first promotional victory, dropping all three of his UFC bouts so far. The 32-year-old former D1 wrestler was stopped by Ode Osbourne in the second round via TKO before dropping decisions to both Jesus Aguilar and Alden Coria. Despite the rough start, Gurule looks comfortable in the pocket behind a modified cross guard, throws clean counters, mixes in solid leg kicks, and has shown decent head movement in exchanges.
Daniel Barez vs Luis Gurule prediction
This one feels like a proper coin flip on paper, with both men fighting to keep their spots on the roster. Stylistically, the fight boils down to whether Barez’s cleaner boxing is enough to outpoint Gurule across three rounds, or whether Gurule’s physicality and willingness to brawl in the pocket can drag Barez into a fight he doesn’t want.
At range, both fighters will be trading kicks, with neither having a clear edge in that department. The boxing is where the skill gap exists, Barez puts together cleaner combinations and mixes to the body well. However, the gap doesn’t seem significant enough to allow him to completely outclass Gurule. In the pocket, Gurule’s modified cross guard will be able to catch some of Barez’s uppercuts, and Gurule will also have the ability to counter over the jab to neutralise some of Barez’s offence. Gurule embraces chaos far better than Barez when exchanges get a bit heated.
This fight should stay primarily on the feet and I see Gurule taking over with his pressure and pace.
Prediction: Luis Gurule to win
