Shauna Bannon: Can side kick specialist steady the ship at the Apex?
Shauna Bannon (7-2) has gone 2-2 across her four UFC appearances since debuting in 2023. The Irish striker most recently lost to Sam Hughes via submission at UFC Paris, having previously earned a Performance of the Night bonus for her armbar finish over Puja Tomar in London. Bannon spams the side-kick to control range and keep her opponents at bay, and has a sneaky armbar in her toolkit. The concern is that she doesn’t always commit to her strikes, lacking meaningful power, and has shown questionable footwork.
Nicolle Caliari: Former karate world champ drops down to 115 in search of her first UFC win
Nicolle Caliari (8-4) makes her strawweight debut after going 0-2 at flyweight, dropping a split decision to Ernesta Kareckaite before being stopped by Carli Judice in the third round at UFC 318. The 29-year-old Brazilian is a former karate world champion who fights with aggression and intent, throwing sharp boxing combinations while slipping off centreline, she also isn’t afraid to mix in takedowns if needed. Her weaknesses come from the lack of head movement in exchanges and entering in straight lines with her head dipped constantly.
Shauna Bannon vs Nicolle Caliari prediction
Bannon isn’t looking for a firefight, she’d happily sidekick her way to a decision if Caliari lets her. Caliari on the other hand, will chase the fight with urgency from the opening bell, looking to land her slip right hand on Bannon’s straight flurries.
The tactical question is whether Caliari can adapt to Bannon’s lead sidekick on her entries. Judice picked her apart with kicks up the middle along with bodyshots before finishing her, and Bannon’s sidekick comes up fast and can find the body easily. However, this is a different level of competition for Caliari with Bannon being an easier match up than the previous ones. Caliari is the more technical boxer, throws with significantly more power, and showed heart in the final round against Judice despite being outclassed.
The path for Bannon is to keep her distance with her sidekicks, and work for the armbar if Caliari takes this fight to the ground. Caliari just needs to stay compact, watch for that kick, and work her usual boxing game.
Prediction: Nicolle Caliari to win
