Alexander Bublik advanced to the round-of-16 at the Shanghai Masters after wins over Tomas Machac and Brandon Nakashima. He took top seed Alexander Zverev to a deciding set tiebreak, though did go on to lose. Nevertheless, that was a step in the right direction for Bublik after a poor recent run of results. He will hope to generate further momentum with a strong performance at his home tournament.

He received a bye in the first-round and now faces Fabian Marozsan. The Hungarian won his opening match after a straight sets victory over Timofey Skatov. This was a return to winning ways for Marozsan, after his first-round loss in Shanghai to Zachary Svajda.
