Alex Michelsen is coming off the back of the win on the Challenger Tour, as he won the Estoril Open last week with a straight sets win over Andrea Pellegrino in the final as the second seed. The American did not drop a set during the tournament. He had decided to play in the event after a first-round loss to Alexander Bubilk in Madrid, but that win will be a much-needed confidence boost for Michelsen heading into the Italian Open.
Chile Open winner Laslo Djere breezed through his first-round encounter with Tomas Martin Etcheverry, not even facing a break point during the match as he comfortably defeated the Argentinian 6-3 6-2.
Djere does lead the head-to-head 1-0, having defeated Michelsen at an event in Winston-Salem two years ago. However, this will be their first match on clay. The Serbian has competed mostly on clay this season and has conditioned his game in time for the peak of the clay court season. However, we’re backing the 20-year-old to continue the momentum and make it through.
