Zeynep Sonmez advanced to the next round of the Madrid Open after defeating Carlota Martinez Cirez in straight sets. The Spaniard is ranked outside of the top 300 in the world, but she served for the first set after going 5-3 up. Nevertheless, Sonmez reeled off four games in a row to take the lead. The second set was more straight-forward as she wrapped up a 7-5 6-2 victory.
Cristina Bucsa is her next opponent. The Spaniard has not featured on the tour since retiring in her match with Yuliia Starodubtseva at the Miami Open last month. It’s already been a landmark year for Bucsa, as she won her first tour-level title in Merida, while she has also reached a high of 30 in the world rankings.
Bucsa defeated Sonmez in the quarter-finals of that event on the way to the title, but her current level is a bit of an unknown, which may provide some encouragement for her opponent.
