Yannick Hanfmann has come through two challenging qualifying matches to reach the main draw in Basel, overcoming Marcos Giron and Rinky Hijikata, with both matches going to a deciding set.

The 34-year-old showed great composure to pick up both wins, and that comes after a reasonably lean time on the ATP Tour in recent weeks and months.

He takes on compatriot Jan-Lennard Struff in the first round here, and he will be highly motivated against his fellow German.

Struff is coming off a fabulous week in Brussels, where he went all the way to the final before losing to Tallon Griekspoor on Sunday. He produced some superb tennis en route to the final, including wins over Zizou Bergs and Arthur Fils, before losing in three sets to Griekspoor.

That will give the 36-year-old a huge lift, but it may also take something out of him in Basel this week. The emotional and physical drain from losing in the final may well affect him in this match, and with Hanfmann likely to be desperate to overcome his compatriot, we are favouring Hanfmann to get the win here.
