Luciano Darderi’s losing run extended to three matches after an opening round defeat against James Duckworth at the Almaty Open. The Italian has one title to his name this season, at the Chile Open during the Golden Swing. His hard court results have improved, with runs to the round-of-16 at the Australian Open and the US Open. He has just one victory from three matches in Vienna.

He will face compatriot Matteo Arnaldi. The 25-year-old was soundly beaten by Lorenzo Musetti in Lyon last week. Arnaldi is back inside the top 40 of the world rankings, having reached his first ever Grand Slam semi-final at Roland Garros. However, he has struggled for consistency away from his favoured clay courts.
