Stan Wawrinka vs Jiri Lehecka prediction
Stan Wawrinka will be hoping to put on a show in Basel this week, but the 41-year-old has been handed an incredibly tough draw as he comes up against Jiri Lehecka in the first round.
Wawrinka returned to action in Lyon last week and picked up a hard-fought win over Spaniard Martin Landaluce before losing to top seed Flavio Cobolli in straight sets. That was his first action on the ATP Tour since the US Open, and he will be hoping to follow it up with an impressive showing in Basel this week.
Standing in his way is Lehecka, who will be hoping to go far in Basel after some impressive performances on the Asian leg of the ATP Tour earlier this month. Lehecka reached the final of the Japan Open before losing to Carlos Alcaraz, but he was in excellent form throughout.
The 24-year-old is 17 years younger than Wawrinka and is enjoying one of his best years on tour so far, and he will be looking to end it in style.
This will not be easy against Wawrinka, who will be fired up in front of his home crowd, but Lehecka should ultimately have too much quality and we expect the Czech to get the victory.
We saw something similar when Dominic Thiem played the final tournament of his career in Vienna, in his native Austria. While he was motivated to put on a show, the emotion clearly took over as he lost his opening match, and we can see the same happening with Wawrinka here. The day will be full of emotion, but with so much hype around his farewell, it seems inevitable that Lehecka will get the win.
