Elena Rybakina is one step away from retaining her title in Ningbo.

The top seed produced her best display of the week in a 6-3 7-5 victory over sixth Diana Shnaider to progress to Sunday’s showdown for the trophy.

Standing in the Kazakhstani star’s way of going back-to-back is Leylah Fernandez, who produced an excellent showing in a similar 6-3 7-5 win against Marie Bouzkova.

This will be their sixth meeting and there is enough in their previous match-ups to give the Canadian underdog belief she can spring the upset.

The head-to-head stands at 3-2 to Elena and she has won the last two meetings, but it’s 2-2 on hardcourts and there’s no doubt Leylah has the better movement out of the two.

Of course, Rybakina’s serve and plus-one is often a Plan A that delivers and we expect it to here, although Fernandez may take it three if she can hang tough and she’s played plenty of breakers and close sets with the world number one in the past.
