Sara Sorribes Tormo was unable to qualify in Osaka last time out, losing to Maddison Inglis in straight sets. The Spaniard has just one tour-level victory all season, at the Transylvania Open in Cluj-Napoca. The 30-year-old is ranked outside the world’s top 150. She did win a lower-level title in Portoroz back in April, but is struggling to establish herself on the WTA Tour at this stage of her career.

Her first-round opponent is Zeynep Sonmez. The 24-year-old has not managed to make an impact on the tour in recent weeks. She has advanced to three quarter-finals in 2026, but the last of those was back in June at the Eastbourne Open. Worryingly for Sonmez, that was the last time she registered back-to-back main draw victories on the WTA Tour.

Despite those results, I do expect Sonmez to come through this one, and she will be hoping for a deep run here before the end of the campaign.
